KUMASI, GHANA — The National House of Chiefs, presided over by Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, has completed a landmark three-day consultative symposium at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, unanimously adopting the Model Customary Land Lease Framework for commercial investments.
The historic framework harmonizes centuries-old traditional stool land ownership protocols with modern commercial lease registrations. Under the new charter, foreign and domestic agribusiness investors can secure 50-year registered agricultural leases through transparent, standardized royal consents that eliminate overlapping boundary disputes.
Crucially, the code mandates that commercial lease contracts must allocate a minimum 15% equity carry for local community development funds, guaranteeing funding for rural clinics, schools, and clean water boreholes in host paramountcies.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, urged paramount chiefs to be stewards of industrial progress: 'Our ancestors preserved these lands not as barren museum pieces, but as sovereign endowments to feed our youth and build thriving industries.'
