ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS has concluded an extraordinary ministerial consultation in Abuja, approving the finalized operational concept for the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) specialized counter-insurgency battalion.
The defense ministers resolved to deploy joint reconnaissance detachments and real-time biometric passenger screening stations along the border corridors linking northern Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin to intercept illicit small arms trafficking and cross-border banditry.
President of the ECOWAS Commission Omar Alieu Touray stressed that regional economic integration cannot thrive in the absence of unwavering collective security. The ministerial council also authorized the establishment of a $1.5 billion regional peace fund, with mandatory national budgetary contributions paired with targeted sovereign defense allocations.
