ACCRA, GHANA — Vice-chancellors, rectors, and academic deans representing forty leading universities across Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Sierra Leone have ratified the Accra Declaration on Regional Higher Education Mobility at the AAU headquarters.

The landmark agreement establishes a standardized credit transfer mechanism modeled on the European ECTS framework, enabling undergraduate and postgraduate scholars in engineering, agriculture, and computer science to complete joint semester modules across partner universities without losing academic standing.

AAU Secretary General Prof. Olusola Oyewole noted that breaking down national linguistic and regulatory silos between Anglophone and Francophone institutions is crucial to retaining top scientific talent on the continent.

The consortium also launched the West African Doctoral Research Fund, pooling $45 million in sovereign and philanthropic endowments to finance 500 PhD fellowships in climate-resilient agriculture, tropical epidemiology, and renewable energy technologies.
