Executive Intelligence Brief

  • $85 million allocated to upgrade 35 technical institutes across ECOWAS states.
  • High-precision CNC machining and certified welding simulators installed.
  • Direct industrial apprenticeship partnerships established with regional EPC contractors.
  • Dual-certification introduced with internationally recognized engineering bodies.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched the second disbursement tranche of the Regional TVET Modernization Fund, allocating $85 million to 35 public technical training institutes across eight coastal and Sahelian member states.

The funding will install modern computer numerical control (CNC) machining centers, high-voltage automotive diagnostic bays, and certified industrial welding simulators at technical colleges in Takoradi, Kaduna, San Pedro, and Saint-Louis.

The initiative directly addresses shortages of certified artisans required by major infrastructure projects, including cross-border gas pipelines, deepwater container terminals, and mining processing plants. Currently, multinational EPC contractors frequently import specialized technicians from outside the continent.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr stated that curricula are now co-certified with international engineering bodies, ensuring that young TVET graduates receive globally recognized City & Guilds and ISO industrial certifications upon graduation.
