BUCHANAN, LIBERIA — Global steel and mining giant ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has reaffirmed its commitment to the completion of its Phase Two expansion project during technical panel discussions at the LIMEC 2026 mining summit in Margibi.
The multi-year capital program includes upgrading the 243-kilometer heavy-haul railway corridor linking the Tokadeh mines in Yekepa (Nimba County) with the deepwater Port of Buchanan (Grand Bassa County), expanding annual iron ore export capacity to 15 million metric tonnes.
AML Chief Executive Officer Michiel Van Der Merwe reported that civil works for a new multi-user concentrator plant in Yekepa have surpassed the 70% completion mark, which will process low-grade iron ore into high-value premium concentrate.
The project is currently supporting more than 3,000 direct Liberian jobs and includes dedicated apprentice training programs at the ArcelorMittal Training Academy in Yekepa, transferring critical industrial engineering and locomotive maintenance skills to young Liberians.
