Bui Power Authority Inaugurates 50 MWp Solar Photovoltaic Plant in Yendi to Power Northern Ghana Transmission Ring
The Ministry of Energy and Bui Power Authority have connected a 50-megawatt solar facility to the northern 161kV substation in Yendi, reducing transmission losses and expanding clean power generation.
Executive Intelligence Brief
- 50 MWp solar farm fully integrated into Yendi 161kV transmission substation.
- 92,000 bifacial solar panels deployed using 100% Ghanaian engineering workforce.
- Dramatic reduction in transmission losses along the southern-northern trunk line.
- 15MW battery storage system provides grid frequency stabilization during peak hours.
YENDI, GHANA — The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has fully commissioned its 50-megawatt-peak (MWp) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic installation in Yendi, marking the completion of the latest clean energy milestone under Ghana's Renewable Energy Master Plan.
The installation comprises 92,000 high-efficiency bifacial solar modules and automated central inverters engineered by indigenous Ghanaian electrical contractors. The plant connects directly into the Yendi 161-kilovolt substation, reinforcing power reliability across the Northern, North East, and Savannah regions.
Chief Executive Officer of BPA Samuel Kofi Dzamesi underscored that siting large-scale renewable generation close to northern industrial demand centers drastically reduces the costly technical line losses that previously occurred when wheeling thermal power 600 kilometers northward from coastal Aboadze and Tema.
The plant also incorporates a 15-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS), allowing the facility to smooth frequency fluctuations and release stored solar energy into the national grid during early evening peak demand hours.
