TEMA, GHANA — Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3 at the Port of Tema has shattered historic throughput records, handling 1.62 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) over the preceding twelve months.
The deepwater container facility, which features a 16-meter draft capable of handling 20,000-TEU ultra-large container vessels, saw a 24% surge in transit cargo destined for landlocked Sahelian nations including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Director-General of GPHA Michael Luguje stated that substantial investments in automated optical character recognition gates, non-intrusive container scanners, and round-the-clock customs clearance have cut vessel port stay times from 4.2 days to an average of 1.4 days.
The port authority also confirmed that work has commenced on the dedicated rail link connecting Tema Harbour with the Boankra Integrated Inland Logistics Port in the Ashanti Region, which will remove 1,200 heavy container trucks daily from the congested Accra-Kumasi highway.
